Colour Moves: First solo exhibition in Canada
For Hermann Valentin Schmitt the artistic impulse comes from what he sees in nature and what he hears in music. His imagination transforms these sensations into deep colour spaces. The German art critic Bärbel Sanchez calls him the artist “who dances with colour.”

The colour compositions in this exhibition, on canvas, paper, wood and copper plate, capture the flow of yellow, red, blue and green filtered through constantly changing light.

This is the first solo art exhibition in Canada for Schmitt, who was born in Heidelberg, Germany and now makes his home in Berlin, Germany and Victoria, BC Canada.

The April 2024 art exhibition is held over three weekends (April 4 to 20, Thursdays to Saturdays, 4:30pm-7:30pm) at the Rockslide Gallery, 780 Blanshard Street, Victoria, BC.

Schmitt’s choice of venue celebrates the vibrant arts community in Victoria and underscores the importance of an arts hub in this city of light and colour.
